Gqom masterminds,  dropped their debut “Gqom Is The Future album to critical acclaim last week Friday. Such is their current status in the industry that the album immediately shot right to the top of SA charts and the reception has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Que and Goldmax whose real names are Thobane Mgobozi and Zipho Mthembu respectively recently had a chat with TshisaLIVE where they discussed the success of that project of musical art and Gqom among other things.

“We were blown away with response to the album but it was really what we expected. It all went according to plan,” Que said.

However, they aren’t just willing to get carried away with the current numbers as their ambitious aim is to become the first act to reach gold certification for a Gqom project. The Durban-based  went further:

“We have only just released the physical copies of the album so it’s a little too early to tell how far we are from reaching gold but we have no doubt that we are going to go gold and even platinum. People love our and our digital sales have been amazing. We are number one across the country,” Que explained.

With the heights the duo has now taken Gqom , it is very easy to forget the struggles and challenges that accompanied their accomplishments at the early stages.

It was not easy at first having to convince and earn the trust of other artists, music bosses and even their parents to take a chance on them.

“My parents weren’t too happy about me wanting to do music because they are academics but I did what they wanted from me and finished school and now they don’t mind what I do. It’s not so bad now but we also used to get a lot of questions when we started out, like: ‘who are these guys and what are they doing?’ and ‘what is gqom?’ It was only after we started making music for other artists that things got easier,” he said.

However, big things would eventually come their way once they got discovered by West Ink boss, Mampintsha, who got the duo to work on Babes Wodumo‘s monster hit song, “Wololo.”

The boys talked about that chance encounter and how it has been uphill ever since.

“We were releasing music and he heard our songs. He gave us a call one random day and was like: ‘hey guys, this is Mampintsha. Please come through to the studio and work on something’. That is how we worked on Wololo.”

It did not take them too much time to cook up something off their stash and stables. They got to work right away and the success of that effort has been a masterclass.

“In our , we have so many beats so it wasn’t too difficult to put a beat over the lyrics. After an hour it was done. We all knew that it would be a big song but no one was expecting it to be that massive,” he concluded.
